John Sachen – Denkart
July 11th - Speaker on Tenkara Rod Fishing
John Sachen is a native Arizonan who’s first experience fly fishing was with a tenkara rod and he’s been hooked ever since. Tenkara is Japanese style fly fishing with a long history in Japan and recently gaining popularity here in the US. John has successfully fished tenkara for the past four years across Arizona and Colorado in streams, rivers, lakes, ponds and even off beaches in Mexico. John is passionate about everything tenkara and his fluency in Japanese language has helped him research the history, study techniques and communicate with some of the masters in Japan, a place where he called home for 30 years. John loves the simplicity of fishing with only a long telescopic rod, fixed length line and simple fly patterns which allows him to focus less on equipment and more on presentation using tight line fly manipulation and nymphing techniques to catch fish. Tenkara style fly fishing is ideal for small streams and tail waters and perfect for hiking high mountain streams and headwaters. The relatively low barrier to entry and intuitive nature of fishing with tenkara makes it an ideal choice for newcomers to the sport and for those who are interested in trying something different. John’s talk will focus on the history of tenkara, rod and line types, techniques and address any general questions.
