Hello AFC members. I hope everybody had a safe and happy Fourth of July! At a time each year when we celebrate our independence, what better way to celebrate than on a fishing trip. Now that the real summer is here, it is a great time to get out of town.
I recently went on a day trip to Knoll Lake. It was a good day, producing three good-sized rainbows. The temperature was 77 degrees when I left, making it very difficult not to turn right around and go back.
So if you have an opportunity for a trip, go for it. And keep an eye on Fishing Buddies on our website for someone to share the trip with.
Speaking of upcoming trips, the annual San Juan trip is coming up October 15- 19. Phil Koda has a Sportsman’s Warehouse $25 gift card that will be drawn and presented to the winner at the Liars Banquet. All you have to do to have a chance to win is register on Eventbrite. When you register, put down if you have or need a roommate, ride, or special accommodations. Even if you will not be staying at Abe’s, just let us know you will be going on the trip. Phil Koda and John Doss are working to make it a great trip, just like last year.
This month’s quote is from an unknown source but it could not be said any better:
“A woman who has never seen her husband fishing doesn’t know what a patient man she married!”
Stay cool everyone, and we will see you at the July 14 general meeting.
Hello AFC members. I want to officially welcome Barb and Brian Fayle as our new Hospitality Co-Chairs. We are very excited to have them on the Board. They will be the first faces you see at every monthly meeting so please stop by and introduce yourself.
The hot weather has finally arrived and will be here until October. Time to take your fishing gear to a new destination, whether it’s north to the Rim or White Mountains or west to San Diego. Please make sure to send your pictures to John Doss so they can be posted on the website. We’ll also want to hear your fishing stories at the next meeting.
I came across an interesting bit of history: On June 1, 1933, the World’s Fair opened in Chicago titled, “A Century of Progress”. I cannot imagine what people in 1933 would have envisioned for the next century or how it would shape their and their family’s futures. On January 22, 1962, AFC was founded. For over 50 years, our club has brought many people together. I can only imagine what the founders and original members would say if they could see us now.
AFC is only as strong as its members. I am very proud of all the hard work by our current members and Board, whose mission is to make the club better tomorrow for all its members and for our community. As President, I will continue to work to make the club better than ever.
From Zane Grey: “If I fished only to capture fish, my fishing trips would have ended long ago.”
See You Next Meeting,
Springtime is here and it’s time for “March Madness.” I’m not talking about college basketball; I am referring to cabin fever madness. That is when you load all the flies you tied this winter and get out of the house and go fishing for the first time in the spring. Better yet, contact a buddy on our “AZFishbook” page and make a day of it with another club member. No matter where or when you go, getting a line wet for the first time in the spring makes the long winter melt away. Don’t forget to take pictures and send them to John Doss so we can include them in the PowerPoint at the general meeting.
The AFC Annual Banquet and Raffle on March 6 promises to be a great event. I look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones. The food is going to be delicious and the raffle prizes awesome. Brad Johnson and his committee have done another great job this year.
Speaking of committees, we are starting to form committees for a lot of fun events coming up in 2016. We are looking for members who would like to help with conservation, outings, education, special events, youth activities, and other areas where the need arises. We always welcome fresh ideas and perspectives and would like to see all our members get involved in one or more committees. Please contact me or any board member and let us know if you can help. Let’s hear from you and make 2016 the best year ever for AFC!
Our association with the Sunnyslope Community Center has been beneficial to our club, and we support the center any way we can. One of the best ways we can support the center is to swipe our cards when we attend any AFC meeting or class. For the many of you who do this, I thank you. For new members, just remember to stop by the front desk and swipe your card when you come in.
This month’s quote: “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.” – Henry David Thoreau
I believe every fishing trip is its own adventure. Thanks to all of you for making AFC the best club in Arizona.
Well, it is February and a leap year. That means one more day to enjoy the things you love. Tie more flies, spend more time with someone special, or just head to your favorite fishin’ hole to catch one more trout or lift one more beer. It is all good.
